Unconscious Bias is yet again in the news!

The UK chair of KMPG has stepped aside while an investigation takes place on remarks that he made about unconscious bias. Do you know what he said? Is it the sort of thing your staff might say?

Bill Michael, the chair of KMPG, made negative remarks about unconscious bias, for example saying,

“There is no such thing as unconscious bias, I don’t buy it. Because after every single unconscious bias training that has ever been done, nothing’s ever improved.”

In response, one worker wrote

“There’s no such thing as unconscious bias?! Are you joking? Please do your research before just making such statements. Check your privilege.”

Bill Michael has since apologised. But it was not the first, and it will not be the last time that unconscious bias has caused controversy. For example, in January I reported on government decisions to scrap unconscious bias training, and the faulty premise that these decisions were built on. If you missed that update, you can read it here.

I also wrote last year about why unconscious bias staff training is so important and how it helps colleges become the best of the best. If you missed that update, you can read it here
