EHRC guidance on the Marriage (Same Sex Couple) Act

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has published guidance on the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013. Are you clear on the impact of this Act in your organisation? For example: How does the right to freedom of expression, including the expression of religious and other beliefs apply when teaching? Does the Act protect freedom of expression, including freedom to express religious or other beliefs? Can schools and colleges with a religious character teach about marriage following the organisation’s religious ethos?

Equality Trust report, ‘The Cost of Inequality’, and a new Oxfam briefing on inequality. 

Did you know that the richest one hundred people have as much wealth as the poorest 30% of all households –around 18,900,000 people? Did you know that the impact on the UK of some of the social consequences of inequality includes reduced life expectancy, worse mental health and higher levels of imprisonment? Stonewall campaign and film: ‘No Bystanders’

If your staff (teaching or support) heard offensive language in a corridor or classroom, would they tackle? For example, students casually using the word ‘gay’ to mean useless or rubbish, or students using the word ‘chav’, as a means of abuse?

New ministers for women and equalities

On 9 April 2014, the Government announced the appointments of Sajid Javid MP as Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport and Minister for Equalities, and Nicky Morgan MP as Minister for Women. The appointments follow the resignation of Maria Miller as Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport.
