Are you ready to publish your new equality objectives next month? 

One of the specific duties of the Equality Act 2010 requires colleges and universities to publish equality objectives by April 2012 and then every 4 years. This means that your next set must be published by April 2020. Are you ready? Monitoring by the Equality and Human Rights Commission has, in the past, revealed that many organisation’s equality objectives were not legally compliant. Are yours legally compliant? Do they, for example, meet the legal requirements to be ‘specific’ and to be ‘measurable’? Are they ‘outcome’ rather than ‘output’ focussed? Would a quick reminder of the requirements help?

Taking the lead in E&D

Do you have a lead role in E&D in your organisation? How confident are you on the requirements of the Equality Act 2010? For example, would you know what types of discrimination can be justified and what types cannot? What the main applications of the Act are for education providers? Public Sector Equality Duty and Equality Impact Assessments

Do you recognise that carrying out Equality Impact Assessments (EIAs) demonstrates compliance with your Public Sector Equality Duty? Are your managers confident to carry out EIAs? Do your governors and trustees know that they should ask for evidence of EIA before signing off a new or updated policy, plan or strategy? Would new guidance help?
