Advancing equality awards

Did you know that the Equality Challenge Unit (ECU) sponsored equality awards in March? The University of Essex won first place for developing an Essex LGBT alliance. Runner up, the University of Birmingham, advanced equality within employment practice. You may gain some tips from these case studies on how to advance equality in your organisation.

EHRC guidance on the Marriage (Same Sex Couple) Act

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has published guidance on the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013. Are you clear on the impact of this Act in your organisation? For example: How does the right to freedom of expression, including the expression of religious and other beliefs apply when teaching? Does the Act protect freedom of expression, including freedom to express religious or other beliefs? Can schools and colleges with a religious character teach about marriage following the organisation’s religious ethos?

Stonewall campaign and film: ‘No Bystanders’

Are gay people born or made?

Did your staff see the Guardian article in February, about 3,000 neurologists from around the world who met in Lisbon to settle a debate that has raged for decades: are gay people born or made? Did your staff see the television programme on ITV where a gay doctor went undercover to explore how people offer ‘cures’ to change people from gay to straight? What do your staff think?
