What would you do if a visiting speaker requested gender segregation in the audience?

Universities UK recently published guidance that included a hypothetical case study exploring the legal considerations of an external speaker requesting gender segregation in the audience at an event. The case study suggested that voluntary segregation of the audience may be possible, and this caused controversy across the sector and within national media. LSIS revised specific duties guidance

In my December 2012 edition of equality news, I commented on the outcomes of a sampling exercise conducted by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC). This looked at how public authorities in England have met their duty to publish equality information. A significant number of authorities were sampled, including 115 colleges; many colleges were not meeting their duties, and we performed, overall, relatively poorly. Updated, this guide is essential reading for anyone with responsibilities for meeting the Equality Act 2010 specific duties.
